Local 38 Team 1 won the statewide softball tournament in Stockton last month. Pictured here are (left to right, back row) Kyle Gonzaga, Travis Gonzaga, Tom Lujan, Jason Hagemann, Alex Freitas, Steve Venturi, Josh Rogan, Nick Colvin and Coach RJ Ferrari; (left to right, front row) Ryan Peterson, Tanner Westmoreland, Tommy McGee, Joe Matteucci and Justin Beecher.

Local 38 won it’s fourth championship in five years at the United Association California State Softball Tournament held in Stockton in August. Local 38 Team 1, coached by Business Manager Larry Mazzola, Jr., and Business Agent RJ Ferrari, went 5-0 to take home the title for the fourth time in five years.

Local 38 Team 2, coached by Busi-ness Agent Bill Blackwell and Water Department Shop Steward Jimmy Kazarian went 4-2 in the tournament, finishing in third place.

Local 38 won the title in 2014, 2015 and 2016, before finishing third in last year’s competition.
“I am very proud of both of our teams,” said Mazzola, Jr. “Not only are there some outstanding players, but both teams have a winning attitude and make playing a lot of fun. Four out of five titles is quite an accomplishment, and everyone deserves a lot of credit.

Much of the credit goes to Ryan Peterson who batted over .700 for the tournament, winning the Batting Champ title. Steve Venturi pitched in all five games for Team 1, walking one batter in the entire tournament, and winning Defensive MVP honors. Other Team 1 standouts included Joe Matteucci who played an outstanding 3rd base, and Kyle Gonzaga, who distinguished himself in the outfield and at the plate.

Team 2 had its own highlights, including opening the tournament with a 19-run first inning in their first Saturday game. Anthony Papaleo and Greg Plate both had great tournaments, and Doug Wodarcyk pitched well throughout the contest and John Aspillera had a solid performance at the plate.
Once again Local 38 brought its own cheering section, with more than 30 members, families and friends in attendance to root them on.

This is always a great weekend,” said Mazzola, Jr., “And it’s particularly nice to get back on the winning track.

“I want to thank Bill Taylor, Louie Montalbo and everyone else at Local 442 for putting on another great tournament,” said Mazzola, Jr. “They do an outstanding job of hosting the tournament, and we really appreciate all their effort.”
