  • Local 38 Hosts Padilla Campaign Fundraiser
    Posted On: Jun 13, 2017

More than 30 San Francisco labor leaders attended a breakfast campaign fundraiser for California Secretary of State Alex Padilla this month. The gathering was held at Local 38‘s headquarters, and was cosponsored by the San Francisco Labor Council and UA Locals 342 (Oakland) and 467 (San Mateo).

Padilla began his political career as the third youngest ever member of the Los Angeles City Council, where he became the first Latino to serve as City Council President (for three terms). Following that tenure, he was elected to the California State Senate, serving for two four year terms before being elected Secretary of State in 2014.

“We are very proud to support Alex Padilla for Secretary of State in 2018,” Local 38 Business Manager Larry Mazzola, Jr., told the audience. “He has been a longtime friend to Local 38 and to labor in general, and has an outstanding labor voting record throughout his time on the LA City Council and the California State Senate.
“Given the national political situation and the attacks on labor unions,” he said, “it is vital we have strong leadership in our state. We need leaders who will fight for California’s working men and women. Alex Padilla is one of those leaders.”
Throughout his career Padilla has won strong support from the Los Angeles labor community, and that support has expanded as he has served in statewide office. Padilla  was honored with the “Defending Democracy” award for his ground breaking efforts to protect and expand the right to vote at the Joint Legislative Conference of the California Labor Federation and the California State Building and Construction Trades Council, held in Sacramento last month.
